How to Cook Brown Rice

This is a basic recipe for cooking brown rice.

Yield: About 3 – 4 cups brown rice

Ingredients
Main Ingredient
  • 1 cup uncooked brown rice
Soak
  • 2 cups water
Cook
  • 3 tsp high smoke point oil (optional)
  • 2 cups water or vegetable broth
Instructions
Optional: Soak (6 Hours Advance)
  1. Combine the brown rice and water in a bowl and soak at room temperature for at least 6 hours.
  2. Drain and rinse the soaked rice.
Cooking Options
Stovetop
  1. Add the soaked brown rice into a saucepan with a lid.
  2. Optional: Cook the rice with the oil until fragrant.
  3. Pour 2 cups of water/broth into the saucepan.
  4. Bring the brown rice to a boil, and then let it simmer with the lid on for 20 minutes. If the soaking step was skipped, simmer for 40 minutes.
  5. Remove the brown rice from heat. Let it rest for 10 minutes with the lid on.
  6. Fluff the rice using a fork or a rice paddle.
Rice Cooker
  1. Add the brown rice and the 2 cups of water/broth to the rice cooker.
  2. Turn on the cooker.
  3. Fluff the rice using a fork or a rice paddle.
Storing Options
Refrigerate
  1. Store the brown rice in an airtight container in the refrigerator and use within 3 days.
Freeze
  1. Store the brown rice in an airtight container in the freezer and use within 3 months.

Notes
  1. Total recipe time does not include the optional 6 hour soak.
  2. Store any leftover rice immediately. Do not reheat the rice more than once.
